A DARCY CHRISTMAS BY SHARON LATHAN

The snowflakes drifted slowly downward. They were enormous flakes and floating so delicately on the air that, even in the inky darkness behind the thick glass with only the faint glow of lamplight reflecting, Fitzwilliam Darcy could visualize the minute crystals and unique geometry of each flake. It was mesmerizing and oddly calming to his tumultuous thoughts. He sipped the cocoa that was now lukewarm, watched the snow fall and gather into piles on the panes, and struggled to stir up the Christmas cheer one was supposed to enjoy on Christmas Eve.
It was not working.
He couldn’t readily recall the last Christmas that was truly joyous. Surely it was before his mother died, but the memories were faded and supplanted by so many years of forced gaiety. Oh, they exchanged presents and decorated the house and went to church and delighted in a lavish feast. Often they visited Rivallain for the day, the estate of his uncle and aunt, the Earl and Marchioness of Matlock, and once or twice they had dwelt at Darcy House in London for the holiday activities there. But like all festivities since his mother’s passing, and now his father’s, the celebratory atmosphere was muted.
Of course he strived to celebrate the day for his sister Georgiana’s sake, understanding that a child needed the merrymaking. And lauding the birth of their Savior was indeed a commemoration he took very seriously. Yet personally, he often felt that the entire season could easily pass by without him noticing or caring.
Darcy had grown so accustomed to the attitude that it hardly registered any longer. Even while plotting and planning for Georgiana and purchasing gifts—that a delight he truly did enjoy—his internal zeal for Christmas was dim. He did not dread the holiday nor was he particularly gloomy over it; he just did not care all that much.
So why was this year so different? Why did he feel a melancholy blanketing his soul? And why did the dreams continue to invade his sleep? Why was she persistent in burrowing into his mind and hea…? No! He refused to even think it! This Christmas of 1815 was no different than the previous twenty-seven.
He sighed unconsciously and continued with his rapt contemplation of the falling snow and abstracted sipping of the cooling cocoa.

A pile of presents surrounded Alexander Darcy, the heir to Pemberley, who accepted the ridiculousness with his typical stoicism and intense concentration. He did not quite seem able to grasp that something special lurked inside the package. He was perfectly content to look at, play with, or chew upon the ribbons, wrapping, or box itself. The adult assistants allowed this for about two seconds before impatiently “helping” him open the gift to reveal the treasure within. Alexander tolerated the interruption to his play with extreme forbearance, continually amazed when a new toy was miraculously revealed. Then he would squeal with glee, bouncing and waving his arms in the air, and joyfully clutch the prize to his chubby chest.
It was a lengthy process, mainly because Alexander had just recently learned how to walk proficiently. His stumbling early steps and need to hold on to a solid foundation were gone in the wake of new maturity. He was quite proud of his skill and also well aware of just how much more of the world he could explore on two legs that functioned fairly well most of the time. Suddenly sitting on his bottom confined to a small space was wholly untenable! Alexander was an oddly complacent child, but even he grew cranky and annoyed at being compelled to stay put. Luckily he was easily distracted, as most infants were, and readily calmed when a new sparkling bauble was thrust under his nose.
The loving adults thought it was the greatest fun ever.
“Here, Alexander,” Dr. George Darcy said as he loosened the ties holding the maroon and yellow cloth concealing the spongy item inside. “Jharna’s son, Nimesh, had this made for me. It is a hoolock gibbon, my favorite of all the primates in India.” George, younger brother to Darcy’s deceased father, freed the exquisitely crafted stuffed animal from its wrappings, grandly plopping it onto the toddler’s lap.
“Uncle! He is remarkable.” Darcy leaned forward from his cross-legged perch behind his son to finger the soft brownish-black fur. “This is incredible taxidermy. Are you sure you want Alexander to drool and chew on such a masterpiece?”
George waved his hand dismissively. “It is well preserved. Allow him to play with it for a while, then perhaps it can be put aside temporarily to extend its life. But I wanted it for a toy. See how the long arms wrap around you, Alexander. He is bigger than you so will be great for cuddling.”
Alexander was mesmerized. He pressed the black bead eyes, ruffled the thick white fur rings around the eye sockets, pried open the toothless mouth to peer inside, squeezed the thin arms, and wiggled the long toes. He looked up at his father, smiled widely, and released a string of nonsense intermingled with “papa” and a smattering of intelligible words as he proudly showed off his newest animal.
Darcy smiled, pulling his son onto his lap for a tight hug. “You are assuredly the only child in Derbyshire with a stuffed gibbon, my sweet.”
“Papa, see? M’key? Mine, Unc Goj?”
“Yes, he is yours and ‘monkey’ will do, I suppose. Your Uncle George spoils you.”
George snorted. “Somebody has to. Poor baby would have no toys to play with if not for his favorite uncle.”
Georgiana laughed. “Yes indeed. Nothing to play with! Poor Alexander. Now, open this one from your favorite auntie, my precious.”

Darcy grunted. “Be that as it may, what I am curious about is how you two seem to be catching so many clandestine kissers under mistletoe. Wandering the halls freely after escaping your nannies?”
“Yep!” They declared simultaneously with nary a hint of remorse. “We saw Aunt Mary kissing Uncle Joshua. Caleb kissing Miss Cassie. Aunt Giana kissing…”
“Very well,” Darcy dryly interrupted the flood, “I believe we get the idea.”
“And Uncle George showed us the hidden passageway behind the King Arthur tapestry!”
“Oh did he now?” Darcy growled, Lizzy bursting into laughter.
“Be calm, dearest. It only leads to the music room so no harm can be done. I have never understood what the purpose of that secret route could be.”
“Mysteries of Pemberley aside, you two are hereby forbidden to evade your caretakers and wander the halls, understood?”
“Yes, Papa,” they quickly agreed, heads nodding in unison.
Lizzy chuckled under her breath and Darcy briefly closed his eyes, both knowing the admonishment would be as ignored as the promise. Prim Alexander sat on his father’s lap through the whole commentary with his lips pressed tightly together and brows knitted. Lizzy ruffled his curls, leaned for a kiss, and whispered for his ears only, “Occasional misbehaving is healthy, Alexander. You should give it a try now and again.” But he truly looked aghast at the idea, Lizzy only laughing harder and pulling her firstborn onto her lap for a snug embrace.
“Can we go now? Please!” Michael and Noella pleaded, bouncing on their knees, for once not irritating each other in their agreement over Christmas entertainments.
“I am hungry.”
“And I have Christmas presents and birthday presents and cake!”
“It’s not fair that she gets more presents,” Michael grumbled, the truce obviously over as he glared at his sister.
“It’s my birthday!” Noella smugly declared, smirking as she added, “Christmas is my special day, not yours.”
“Christmas is everybody’s special day. It’s Jesus’ day, not yours, silly!”
“Today is God’s day first,” Lizzy interrupted what promised to be full-scale war. “But we will manage to celebrate both special events. Just as Alexander’s birthday falls on mine and your papa’s anniversary and we always celebrate both.”
“But…”
“No ‘buts’ young man,” Darcy caressed the thick brown locks so like his. “Look at it this way, son: You have a birthday all your own. A day not shared with any other holiday or person.”
“So can we open presents now?” Noella asked, ignoring Michael’s cheery expression and protruding tongue.
“Your birthday will be celebrated later today, after church and Christmas.”
“But I am three!” she wailed, tears instantly forming.
“Technically you will not be three until late this afternoon, Noella, because that is when you were born.”
“But, Papa! That is silly. Today is my birthday and today happened at midnight!”
“You cannot argue with that logic,” Lizzy murmured with a smile.

NOT FUNNY!

And so, my cousins, Chiemena and Chiemerie and I just got back from the Nmowu (Masquerade Festival) at the central football stadium in the village. We had so much fun that we couldn’t stop talking about it on our way ‘home’. You see, My Dad and their dad are brothers and to make coming ‘home’ to the village more family oriented, they decided to build a big house with seven rooms together, instead of having separate houses. As we got home, the unpainted home looked empty and Chimena couldn’t stop talking about how ‘haunted’ the house was. It looked a little haunted though especially as the house was not yet painted; only plastered. We all decided to stay in a room and continue our gist about the masquerade festival, school and any other thing that comes to mind, until the others (My parents, my uncle and aunt, and our aunt, Our Dads’ sister) came back from their outing. While we were talking, we all heard a door close, I thought it was just breeze, but Chiemena said if it was just breeze, then he’d really believe the house was haunted’, to buttress his ‘haunted’ argument. Chiemerie, his twin sister, concurred with him, saying that the door slams was too strategic to be just breeze. We decided to ignore the door slam, but then we heard another door open and close.
‘Whose there?’ we shouted in unison, but no reply, instead, we heard footsteps.
‘Whose there?’ we shouted again, this time partly intrigued and partly scared (although none of us would admit the second part) but still no reply.
While Chiemena and I were still being chickens about going to check or see who it was, Chiemerie decided to go check, she closed the door to the room behind her as she left and didn’t return five minutes later. We began to shout her name but no reply. Five minutes to ten minutes later, we began to hear ‘chopping’ noise downstairs. Chiemena and I then decided to go together to go rescue Chiemerie thinking some village maniac might be chopping or getting ready to chop her.
We climbed down the stairs and noticing the sound was coming from the kitchen. We proceeded towards the kitchen only to see Chiemerie and our aunty cooking, Chiemerie was busy chopping veggies on the chopping board. Chiemerie tells us she came down only to discover it was Aunt Nkiru but Aunt Nkiru was on earpiece so she wasn’t able to hear us call out.
‘What about when we called your name?’ I asked Chiemena.
‘I didn’t feel like answering and Aunt Nkiru decided we play a trick on you guys, so you’ll think the ghost captured me’ she laughed sarcastically as she made the ‘uhhhhhhhh’ ghostly sound.
‘Not funny’, I told her
‘Not funny’ Chiemena concurred.
But Chiemerie and Aunt Nkiru laughed on anyway.

THE BEYONCE, CHIMAMANDA COMBO- “FLAWLESS”

Flawless is an inspirational song for women which is included in Beyonce’s recently released self-titled album. ‘Beyonce’ which was released on iTunes on Thursday, December 12th is Singer, Beyonce’s  5th solo album and features 31tracks, 14 of which are new songs. The album also features track collaborations with Justin Timberlake, Kelly Rowland , Drake and Jay Z.
In ‘Flawless’, Queen B includes a portion of the award winning author’s speech about feminism and roles women play in the society.
Below, are the lyrics (speech) to the song
“We teach girls to shrink themselves
To make themselves smaller
We say to girls
“You can have ambition
But not too much
You should aim to be successful
But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man”
Because I am female
I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
Always keeping in mind that
Marriage is the most important
Now marriage can be a source of
Joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach aspire to marriage
And we don’t teach boys the same?
We raise girls to each other as competitors
Not for jokes or for accomplishments
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings
In the ways that boys are
Feminist- the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes”

Great speech coming from a great mind… Thanks Queen B for pointing that out!

TELL ME ABOUT IT

Today was one of those days.
‘I got to work early this morning, and then my boss asks to see him in his office, there he hands me my termination of work letter; you see I lost my job today. ‘But he says he’s sorry that they couldn't afford that many staffs anymore, so they had to let a quarter of staffs go and he’s sorry I’m among them, he looked genuinely sorry too’.
‘Aren’t they all? I ask rhetorically as I gulp down the glass of spirit in my hands.
‘And then’, I continue with my face towards an old man, whose face was in the clouds and had absolutely no idea what the hell I was talking about.
‘I go to withdraw money from the ATM, but my accounts in red!’ I laughed hysterically.
‘You see, I was way overdue for my salary, with this shitty economy and all I needed the job more, but instead they let me go and without money too’, I could sue them old man’, I say as I gulp another gulp of spirit laughing.
‘And then on my way to this bar to drown out my sorrows, this jeep drives by me and splashes this bucket of muddy water on me!’
‘you see I had such a shitty day, I have to be happy, I’m so freaking happy, as I’m walking to the bar, this idea pops in my head, “why, instead of drowning my sorrow, I should celebrate!’
‘What the hell, it’s Friday anyway, ‘here’s to the freaking weekend’ I toasted, but my little old friend was already snoring away in dreamland.

YAWS AND MYN

“Yaws and Myn” is the hilarious new comedy series by Wazobia Fm’s on air personality, Yaw. I recently watched the ‘visa application’ episode and I just had to write about it. This episode had me laughing my ass off right from the beginning till the end, and since subsequent episodes are hilarious as well, I just have to give it the comedic five stars! …Yea, the premiere episodes weren’t all that funny; they were more like combinations of old jokes, but the series seem to have picked up quite well. I can’t find that particular episode for those of us who missed it but as soon I do, I’ll get it across to you guys.
Yaws and Myn airs on
Silverbird TV Lagos on Saturdays 11:30am
TVC TV Lagos on Tuesdays 8:30pm

DSTV Africa Magic (channel 154) on Mondays 8:00pm

SOLILOQUIES BY CHARLY BOY

The journey from the village was very hectic, as I had to travel a dusty road to Owerri before catching the small plane that was made available by the airline. I was famished (not for the snack on board), and needed to just soak myself in bubble bath.
As soon as I got home from the airport, I rushed into the shower so I could quickly settle to the sumptuous meal quietly waiting for me downstairs at the dining.
I felt relieved with the shower, leaving water streaks on my body and in my birthday suit, I made for my walk-in closet which is right across my open plain bath area.

Midway, a man stands tall looking right into my eyes.

Ahh, what is this, who are you?

This Male bears a lot of semblance with me, physically and as I will conclude hereafter, psychologically, socially, materially, even spiritually.
How I connect with this being is a spiritual thing! We have a lot in common, too much!

He's sometimes mischievous, just like me, fascinated by magic and hocus-pocus; dogged, stubborn, tenacious and what have you.

Vulnerable in many ways, but he has found grand ways of covering his own back, since not many people will do that for you these days.

I see a lot of me in him.

He gets his hand in almost any and every pie, many times burning not only his fingers; but one thing is, he stands by his actions and intents any day. What he believes in, he resides in. He identifies a good cause and, off he goes; even when others in the same cause begin to drag.

He's a stickler for order and decency, a very organized soul, passionate with whatever he agrees to put his weight behind.

A lot of times, close associates, even family members wonder why he be-labors himself with matters that don't concern him directly, after all, the ‘baddest’ cabals and cartels fear him, no one would dare dare him.

If he believes in you, he can love you forever, stay by you through thick and thin.

A lover of life and living, too meticulous about health and cleanliness; yet he stoops even in the lowest of dungeons to pull up wasting souls wallowing in murky, dirty waters.

Though he has fears, of varying dimensions, he's never afraid to confront them, never afraid to tackle, to dribble, even when he stumbles!

He's the only one who knows how fast his heart beats when he confronts a new challenge or venture, but then, he has mastered the art of dealing with stage fright or shyness that it's so difficult for even his closest skin to believe he can be afraid or shy, in very trying circumstances.

I often tell him he's a Master at his game...very daring!

This dude is not one you may refer to as possessing a handsome face, but he's certainly a Hot Bod (body), spending hours in the gym to ensure that no part is rickety, while donning a skin so smooth and velvety like that of a newborn.

This body is to die for!

He says it himself; he is so vain; dedicating ample time to taking care of his external, so that the true internal is not misrepresented.

I thought I was so hungry and couldn't wait to finish my shower but here I am, standing in front of this man, in the nude, by now the water on me is all dried up, standing in front of this enigma, staring each other in the face!

I realize, I don't just bear a semblance with this Dude, I'm actually he and he is me.

In front of my gigantic antic mirror that stands tall on the wall between my bathroom and my walk-in closet, I stopped to look at the guy in the mirror.
Lost in thought, standing in front of me. I see Me!

ENIGMA

The buzzer buzzed. I took my seat while staring at the young reporter lady seated at the other end of the glass divider that divided us. I pick up the phone to listen to her even though I cannot speak back into the phone. I can hear all that she’s saying to me. She wants to hear my story and why I did what I am accused of. I have no story, I can vaguely remember that night. I can vaguely remember the night the police barged into our house and found me standing with a gun pointed at my dead husband.
The prison ward hands me a pen and few sheets of papers. I ask her in written words what she wants to know. She replies me and I can hear her but my lips do not seem to part. ‘Tell me everything’, she says. ‘There’s nothing to tell’, I reply her. ‘I want to know what exactly happened, I want to tell your story, I want to know what you know’, she tells me.
I write to her what I know… It was a cold ‘dark night’; the darkness of that night was peculiar for it was a night devoid of stars. I remember we had just had dinner, then we watched a little of television for it was a school night for the kids and a work night for Simeon and I, after which we tucked our two little girls in bed. The next thing I could remember was, there was a blackout and I woke to find a gun in my hands whose bullets had pierced through Simeon’s heart, just as the police barged into our home and I was arrested on the spot.

The gory sight, left me speechless ever since.
